Intercultural Adventures in Finale Emilia
7-12 October 2019
The third international meeting was held in Finale Emilia, Italy between 07-12 October 2019.
Our topic was Coding lessons to be used in school programs. We used the Digital School Plan (PNSD) for the computer based activities developed during the meeting. On the first day we took part in some lessons at Primary School about CodyRoby, a do it yourself method of unplugged coding. During the week more activities were implemented on coding topics and Italian culture.
We focused on 2 main aspects:
- CODING at Secondary School as one of the key components of PNSD. We organized 3 laboratories: LEGO Wedo 2.0 , SCRATCH 3.0, FLIPPED class using Learning Apps.
LEGO Wedo: small groups of teachers and students worked together with the Italian students to combine Lego bricks with a STEM activity to be used with blocks “drag and drop” that encourage the students to use the coding language.
SCRATCH: during this visual coding activity, the students realized games, stories, projects and animations that they shared in a common area they could reach with their own accounts.
FLIPPED class: the students, divided in 2 groups, took part to a Science lesson prepared by the Italian teachers. The groups were formed by mixing the students from the four countries, so the activity aimed to develop intercultural competencies and communicative skills.
- CULTURAL HERITAGE involving Renaissance dances, history and food. These are important elements of the national identity, learning about customs and history helped to understand the Italian way of life. On the Closing ceremony the students and teachers performed traditional Renaissance dances from the Region. Cultural visits were organized to Verona and Venice to show the influences of diverse cultures among the centuries in the area and the nearby regions. To discover the variety of Italian food, we went to FICO Eataly World the first Italian food theme park where we could see the heritage of the Italian agro-food biodiversity and participate to an ice-cream laboratory. There was an orienteering activity, to discover the places of interest in Finale Emilia using QR Code information, where the students took part in mixed groups as well.
Embedded in the activity coordinators had a meeting to evaluate the project and to program further details.
To close this mobility, a show was held where all the students, teachers, parents and local residents were welcomed. As a final product we edited the next volume of our e-magazine with the students, titled Souvenirs from Italy. It contains articles, photos and videos related to the mobility.
As a result of the meeting the participants implemented a project on Italy that deepened their understanding of a different culture through cooperative exercises. We followed the same method as we started in Hungary, working in mixed groups the students and teachers were encouraged to communicate. The project activities helped to achieve a further development of intercultural competences. Using PNSD is a way of learning coding in I.C. Castelfranchi Secondary School Frassoni, the teachers of the school are experienced on this field and go on attending courses to learn new competences about digital teaching methodology. They usually prepare a project for the whole year that involves all the schools of the Comprehensive Institute: the Infant, the Primary, the secondary school. Executing a new international project was a way to improve and gain new experience for the staff of the I.C. Castelfranchi. The teachers of the partner schools had the possibility to learn about PNSD and share their own practice on this field. All of them got inspired with new ideas and intend to set up more computer based activities in the classroom. Our common language was English, therefore the foreign language skills of the participants improved, they speak English more confidently. Students and teachers made a lot of new friends. The students became much more motivated in learning English. Besides other skills like social or problem solving skills also improved. The relationship between the parents and the school strengthened. The opening and farewell shows were public so local residents could enjoy the international atmosphere as well.
