ENJOY SPAIN - Intercultural Adventures in Mazarrón
2-8 June 2019
From June 3 to 8, the second international meeting was held at CEIP Infanta Leonor with our guests, teachers and students from Hungary, Italy and Poland. The main objective was to develop cultural competence. For this reason many activities of this school year were focused on the study and knowledge of Spanish culture, since knowing our traditions better helps us to understand and respect other different ones.
On the first day we did a general introduction of the culture and customs of the different regions of Spain. The programme started with an opening ceremony at the school where the students and teachers performed a variety of traditional dances from Spain.
Then a school tour was organized in which the Spanish students were the guides who introduced the different autonomous communities of their country: monuments, gastronomy, festivities, and traditions. For lunch we had a typical paella at school where all the Spanish families were invited.
Special mention for the ceremony on the second day where each group of students showed the best of their countries through interesting presentations, songs and dances. Families of the Spanish students and local residents were invited to this event.
During the week more activities were implemented on cultural topics but the three main aspects that we focused on were the following:
- GASTRONOMY as one of the key components of Spanish Culture. We organized cooking workshops with Spanish families. Small groups of teachers and students prepared traditional meals at the homes of local Spanish families and after that, they brought the dishes to the school for all to enjoy a typical Spanish dinner.
- SPORTS AND GAMES. The first activity was a gymkhana. We hosted traditional game workshops to exchange information on well-known games and offer the opportunity for children to experience games from the different cultures. Each country taught its own game: “Calcio Fiorentino”, from Italy; “Méta”, from Hungary, “Two Fires”, from Poland and “Bolos Huertanos” from Spain. The teams were formed by mixing the students from the four countries, so the activity aimed to develop intercultural competencies and communicative skills.
The second activity was a traditional sports circuit where mixed groups of students from the four countries had the opportunity to try all the following games: “el ringo” and “guts” with frisbees, paddle ball, beach volley, “alternative football” and “kin ball”, played with a giant ball.
The third activity was based on nautical sports. Students and teachers practiced kayak, sailing and paddle surf. - CULTURAL HERITAGE involving history, folkdance and music. Cultural visits were organized to Mazarrón, Cartagena and Murcia to show the influences of diverse cultures among the centuries in the region. There was an artistic treasure hunt activity, to discover the places of interest in Murcia, where the students took part in mixed groups as well.
On the other hand we arranged a methodology course for all the teachers about Project Based Learning in which we could share experiences and plan how to organize the next magazine edition.
To close this mobility, a “talent show” was held where the students, teachers and parents had the opportunity of perform typical songs, dances, display physical talents or play the instruments and where local residents were welcomed.
As a final product we edited the next volume of our e-magazine, titled “Enjoy Spain”. It contains articles, photos, videos and recipes related to the mobility.
